Toe Valley and Mount Mitchell Vacation Rental Cabins

August and September Special -- Book 3 nights and get the 4th Free.  Click on "Specials" for more details.

Located in the beautiful Toe Valley, and at the base of Mount Mitchell, highest peak in the eastern US, we are just 2 miles off the gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway at mile post 344 and about half way between Burnsville and Marion on NC80.

The Toe Valley is surrounded by tens of thousands of acres of the Pisgah National Forest on many sides, the Blue Ridge Parkway on the south, and Mount Mitchell State Park is only about 2 miles (as the crow flies, 1/2 hour by road).  As a result, almost every property in the valley is less than 1/4 mile from national forest lands, or other public lands.  Through the center runs the pristine waters of the Cane and Toe Rivers, which has their sources high on the slopes of Mount Mitchell.  You'll find terrific trout fishing --- from the headwaters in Pisgah National Forest with its native brook trout which may be taken only on a fly, to the Burnsville area where it broadens into a major river with tubing, canoeing, rafting and wonderful summer swimming holes.  One of our favorite locations to enjoy these activities is at the Carolina Hemlocks Regional Recreation area operated by the Pisgah National Forest.

Because of our proximity to the Penland School of Crafts, the valley has become home to many world-class artisans in glass, metal work, paper, and the visual arts.  Their galleries and workshops are scattered all through the valley, and the Toe River Arts Council operates galleries in both Burnsville and Spruce Pine which feature artists from the area.  We have perhaps the highest concentration of crafts professionals in the world.

Local attractions include
  • Mount Mitchell Golf Course is one of the most playable, while still one of the most challenging courses you'll find.  What I love about the course, is that you don't get penalized for doing something right.  The Asheville Citizen Times readers voted it No. #1 public course in the region, and Golf Digest rated it 4 1/2 stars.
  • Burnsville -- a quaint mountain resort town with an old-timey town square .
  • Penland School of Crafts -- The "Julliard" of crafts.
  • Mt Mitchell State Park -- home of the top 5 peaks in the Eastern US, including Mt Mitchell at over 6600' elevation.
  • Blue Ridge Parkway -- Operated by the National Park Service, its a wonderful route to view grand mountain and valley vistas.
  • Chimney Rock -- a Nature Preserve and great place for hiking
  • Grandfather Mountain -- known for its mile-high swinging bridge, and its internationally recognized biosphere.  Also home to the "Gathering of the Clans" and Highland Games in the fall.
  • Roan Mountain State Park -- home of the largest natural Rhododendron fields, which bloom in mid-June
  • South Toe River -- One of the Eastern US premier trout streams
  • Waterfalls galore -- with Setrock Falls and Roaring Fork Falls within a mile or two from most of our cabins, and featured in the photos here on this page
  • Lynville Gorge and Lynville Falls -- just a short drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway to the North
  • Asheville -- A lively arts scene, one of the "happiest" towns in the US, and recently voted "Beer Town USA" for its many micro-breweries that have come up over the past few years.
  • Biltmore Estate -- The largest private home in the United States, and a "must see" when you're here in the area.
  • Pisgah National Forest -- tens of thousands of acres of woods and creeks and hiking trails surroung the valley on all sides.
  • Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area -- within a couple miles of most cabins, features tubing in the river, fishing, and one of the best swimming holes in the region.  Picnic area, hiking trails, centered on the South Toe River.
  • Horseback Riding at several locations locally.
  • Black Mountain -- terrific town for local arts and gifts of various types, but also home of Tyson Furniture, which can get you nearly anything made in North Carolina at a fraction of the price.  So go ahead and go to Hickory and look at the furniture galleries, but then go to Tyson to order!
  • The Orchard at Altapas -- Just a few miles north on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  In the summer they have live music every weekend, hayrides, food and gifts, and the owner is highly recognized story teller.
In planning your visit, you may need to know that its about 50 minutes drive to the Asheville Airport, 2 1/2 hours to Charlotte, and 3 hours to Knoxville, TN.  We're about 70 minutes to the Tri-cities airport at Bristol/Johnson City TN.
